Contraceptive Patches - The Birth Control Patch
The birth control patch, marketed under the brand name Ortho Evra Contraceptive Patch, is a self-adhesive delivery method of synthetic hormones that act in much the same way as birth control pills to prevent unwanted pregnancy. It is a simple, safe and convenient alternative to the pill and is designed to be applied once a week, worn continuously, for three straight weeks every month. As such, many women find it less burdensome than the daily routine of taking birth control pills. The birth control patch may be applied and worn on a woman's arm, torso, abdomen or buttocks.
The effectiveness of the patch compares favorably with that of the pill, with preventative levels exceeding 99% in some cases. Its price is about the same as birth control pills as well, costing around $30 or $40 per month. As with the pill, the birth control patch requires a medical exam and prescription.
