Birth Control Pills - Oral Contraceptives
Birth control pills, commonly referred to as simply "The Pill", are a prescription-based, daily hormone dosage drug designed to prevent pregnancy. Oral contraceptives inhibit the ability of sperm to reach an egg, with certain birth control pills also preventing ovulation.
Depending on the exact type of birth control pill, dosages are usually either 21-day or 28-day cycles. The pill has become the most frequently used method of contraception, both for its reliability as well as its convenience. The effectiveness of birth control pills in preventing unwanted pregnancies, has been proven to be as high as 99% or greater, making it almost as effective as abstinence.
In order to begin taking birth control pills, a woman must be evaluated by a licensed health care provider who will prescribe the most suitable form of the medication. The pill may be purchased with a prescription at pharmacies and clinics and typically cost anywhere from $20 to $40 for a month's supply. Many health insurance policies provide coverage for birth control pills.
