Contraceptive Sponges
The contraceptive sponge is another non-prescription form of birth control, readily available over the counter in most drug stores, markets and family planning centers. The sponge is a foam disc, about an inch and a half in diameter and a half inch thick, coated with a spermicide (nonoxynol-9). Inserted into the vagina prior to sexual intercourse, the sponge acts to block sperm from entering the cervix and releases spermicide to immobilize the sperm.
The sponge was first made available in the early 80s and quickly became popular as an OTC contraception method. However, because of manufacturing issues arising from FDA equipment mandates, the sponge was taken off the market in 1995. Ten years later, with updated manufacturing facilities, the sponge was reintroduced.
The contraceptive sponge is among the more expensive over the counter birth control methods. However, decent discount pricing can be obtained buying contraceptive sponges online. A variety of sponges are currently available for sale in the health and personal care department of Amazon.com.
