The Morning After Pill - Emergency Contraception
The Morning After Pill is an emergency contraceptive drug for use after unprotected sex or the failure of preemptive contraceptive measures. Marketed under the brand name of Plan B One-Step, the morning after pill consists of a dosage of progestin hormones designed to stop ovulation, ensuring that fertilization cannot occur. It further acts to inhibit the likelihood of egg and sperm meeting by affecting the movement of either or both.
As an emergency birth control method, the morning after pill is designed to be taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex. Despite the nickname "morning after pill", Plan B One-Step can be taken within the first 72 hours after sex and may actually be used up to 5 days after intercourse.
The morning after pill is available over the counter (OTC), with no prescription required for those 17 years or older. It's purchase does require the presentation of valid identification at the pharmacy counter. In most states, women under the age of 17 may be able to acquire a prescription for Plan B One-Step while a few states have instituted a policy making the morning after pill available at select pharmacies with no prescription required.
As an emergency contraceptive treatment, the morning after pill is relatively expensive compared to preemptive birth control methods, with a single dosage costing as much as $45 or more.
